Starting a career as an apprentice is more than just a job; it’s a chance to lay the groundwork for a fulfilling career. My journey began at 16, working alongside my dad in the commercial heating industry. His words of wisdom about the importance of trade skills for a stable future have guided me throughout my career. However, I didn’t realise then how this choice would shape my life and open doors I never thought possible.

Diving into the commercial heating industry, I quickly recognised the power of practical skills. My father’s advice about tradesmen thriving rather than just surviving became clear as I gained hands-on experience. Skilled trades can lead to independence, career growth, and solid financial prospects.
My educational path was both intense and fulfilling. Over 11 years, I balanced hands-on experience with formal education. Through a day release program, I was able to work while attending college, which allowed me to grow academically.
For the first four years, I concentrated on earning my NVQ Level 3 in heating and ventilation. This qualification provided a robust foundation for my practical abilities and led me to win the apprentice of the year! Later, I pursued ONC & HNC qualifications in building services engineering, spending an additional four years juggling studies with work. The culmination of my academic efforts was a degree in building services engineering, which required another three years of commitment.
This structured learning experience prepared me for various roles—from pipefitter to gas engineer. Each position offered new insights into the industry and helped me develop a versatile skill set.
As I gained experience, I transitioned into the office and took on project management responsibilities. This shift allowed me to apply my technical knowledge to oversee critical aspects of business operations. I learned how to manage projects effectively, ensuring they met all standards, from compliance to client satisfaction. These experiences deepened my professional skills and instilled pride in my work.
For anyone considering an apprenticeship, especially in fields like commercial heating, I advocate strongly for this blended approach. Apprenticeships offer a unique chance to learn, grow, and succeed in your chosen field. I encourage anyone interested in a trade to seriously consider this route. The benefits are substantial, and the skills acquired are invaluable for personal growth.
With dedication and support, apprenticeships can genuinely change lives. Let’s continue to support this essential model for future generations.
