In recent years, researchers have paid more attention to how physical settings, particularly lighting, affect student performance. Mott et al.'s 2011 study found a clear correlation between glare-free, high-intensity focus lighting and higher Overall Reading Fluency (ORF) ratings among pupils.
The study examined the impact of different lighting conditions on Grade 3 students' reading comprehension, involving 172 participants across three settings:
Focus: ( 6500K and 1000lx) for concentration.
Normal: (3000k, 4000K) for regular activities.
Calm: ( 2900K and 300lx) for independent and collaborative learning.

Key findings revealed that students in the focus lighting condition demonstrated significant improvements in oral reading fluency, achieving a higher number of words read correctly per minute (WCPM) compared to those in standard lighting. This indicates that suitable artificial lighting can enhance learning, especially for at-risk children.
Natural light enhances mood and productivity, yet many classrooms lack adequate windows. LED lighting can be designed to mimic natural daylight and offers enhancing consistent brightness without flickering or glare. This minimises distractions and visual discomfort for students, resulting in better engagement.

Moreover, the benefits go beyond the academic performance, with LED lights consuming up to 75% less energy than traditional fluorescent or incandescent bulbs. This energy efficiency translates into significant cost savings, enabling schools to redirect funds into essential programs and resources. Additionally, this reduction helps lower carbon footprints, supporting environmental sustainability.
As educational institutions recognise the value of optimal learning environments, the shift toward LED lighting solutions is likely to continue, elevating student performance and simultaneously cutting operational costs.
