Each year, St Rocco's hosts a Christmas tree collection which our B-engineering team is always ready to support. This year's task was challenging, with 2,600 trees to collect. Our team of 7 handled 190 trees, contributing to the £41,000+ raised for patient care at St Rocco's Hospice.

This is an awesome achievement, but there's more to it than just the donations. Every year, around 7 million real Christmas trees are bought in the UK, and a shocking 84% of them get tossed out after the holidays. By collecting and recycling these trees, we can stop a lot of organic waste from heading to landfills. This not only cuts down on waste but also helps reduce methane, a potent greenhouse gas that's released when organic stuff decomposes in landfills. So, it's a win for the planet!

The collected trees were processed by the wood chipper, resulting in mulch that will be used by the local council. This significantly enhances local biodiversity through improved soil quality. In addition to this, some trees collected by Reddish Farm were converted into fuel for their biomass boiler, showcasing the continued usefulness of these once-celebrated evergreen trees.

This initiative aligns closely with the principles of B Corp certification, which emphasises social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. B Corps is committed to using business as a force for good, focusing on sustainable practices that benefit both the community and the environment. By recycling Christmas trees and reducing landfill waste, this event exemplifies the B Corp mission of creating a positive impact and promoting sustainability.

In a time when consumerism often leads to waste, involving residents in these projects educates the community on the importance of sustainability and encourages further eco-friendly efforts. By committing to recycling and community improvement, they are not just collecting Christmas trees; they are building the foundation for a hopeful, sustainable future.
