Case Study: Heat Pump
Our customer approached us with the request to replace an obsolete, gas-fired heating plant for a major sports centre serving a public facility. Our tasks included completing a detailed feasibility analysis of decarbonisation options for the hall's heating, as well as designing, installing, and commissioning the new system. We selected a super-high-efficiency system that provided the additional benefits of supporting their carbon reduction goals.

We conducted a feasibility study to identify the most effective low carbon solution for the project. The current system, a 30-year-old gas-fired heating unit, had become outdated and inefficient. After evaluating all available options, we developed a customised, high-efficiency heating solution for the sports hall. This included the installation of a 300kW air source heat pump, a packaged plant room, and a large air handling unit with oversized ductwork and coils, ensuring low-velocity air delivery to minimise disruption during activities in the hall.
The project involved moving the existing plant to a new location behind the sports hall. Ensuring the design and groundwork safety was crucial to protect the public and the nearby school, as the power system operated on a 400A electrical supply.
We collaborated with Mitsubishi for the heat pumps and air source units. The package plant room was constructed off-site and included a 4000L buffer vessel for hot water storage.
After installation, we powered down to modify the incoming electrical switchgear, integrating the system into the existing BMS for remote monitoring. Air was delivered to the sports hall through two 1200mm diameter Fabricducts, adding a modern touch to the setup.
